Spread the love

Exchange 2016 has three types of groups. They are, Distribution Group, Security Group and Dynamic Distribution Group. In this post, I will show steps to create Dynamic Distribution Group in Exchange 2016. Unlike Distribution Group where members are manually defined, Dynamic Distribution Group can add or remove group members automatically based on various filters and conditions.

Create Dynamic Distribution Group in Exchange 2016

In this post, I will create a dynamic distribution group named Management for management users. So when somebody sends email to management@mustbegeek.com the email will be sent to all the members of management group. Log on to Exchange Admin Center (EAC). Click recipients in the features pane. Select groups tab.

Type name and alias of the group name. Under Organization unit, click browse to select the particular OU. Here, I have selected Management OU. The dynamic distribution group will be created in the Management OU. If you don’t specify the OU, the dynamic distribution group will be created in Users OU by default.

Under Owner, click browse and choose user that will own this group. Under Members, choose all recipient types or any other from the list as shown above. Click add a rule, from the drop down list choose recipient container, select Management OU from the list. Click OK. Click save. So all users in this OU will become member of this dynamic distribution group. You can also choose other options like, department, state, company and custom attributes. So when you create new user in this OU, the user will automatically become member of this dynamic distribution group.
