Failed to Add or Remove the Failover-Clustering Feature

Spread the love

I was installing Exchange 2010 with a standard configuration supporting two DAG members. DAG configuration was successful, but got this error when I tried to add the member server to the DAG, the error was “Failed to add or remove the Failover-Clustering feature”. This article shows how you can get around this error.

Failed to Add or Remove the Failover-Clustering Feature

The screenshot below shows detail of the error. “A database availability group administrative operation failed. Error: Failed to add or remove the Failover-Clustering feature. Error: ArgumentNotValid: invalid role, role service or feature: ‘Failover-Clustering;. The name was not found.”

Failed to add or remove the Failover-Clustering feature

Cause: The Exchange environment consisted of Windows 2008 R2 Standard. The problem was the standard edition of Windows Server does not support Windows Failover Clustering. And Database Availability Group (DAG) in Exchange 2010 relies on Windows Failover Clustering feature.

Resolution: The resolution is to convert the existing Standard Edition license of Windows 2008 R2 to Datacenter or Enterprise Edition using DISM command. Issuing this command will convert the Server Editions to the desired ones.

To convert the server to Enterprise Edition use following command in an elevated command prompt:

DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerEnterprise /ProductKey:489J6-VHDMP-X63PK-3K798-CPX3Y

To convert the server to Datacenter Edition use following command in an elevated command prompt:

DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerDatacenter /ProductKey:74YFP-3QFB3-KQT8W-PMXWJ-7M648

Before Conversion:

Before DISM

After Conversion:

After DISM

In this way you can solve the error.
