The ability to deploy RDS hosted apps and desktops via VMware Horizon 6 is an impressive new feature of VMware Horizon 6. This feature is available in Advanced and Enterprise editions of VMware Horizon 6. The hosted applications and desktops can now be managed from View Administrator. Similarly, PCoIP protocol can also be used by clients to access RDS hosted apps and desktops ultimately improving user experience. In this post, I will show steps to setup RDS Host Farm in VMware Horizon 6.
Setup RDS Host Farm in VMware Horizon 6
The diagram below shows our scenario.
Steps to setup RDS Host farm in View are: –
- Install Remote Desktop Session Host service in Windows Server 2012 R2.
- Install View Agent in RDS server.
- Create RDS Host Farm in View Connection server.
Step 1: Install Remote Desktop Session Host service in Windows Server 2012 R2
Log on to RDS host. Make sure you have joined the server to Active Directory domain. Open Server Manager. Click Manage and select Add Roles and Features.
Click Next on Before you begin page. Choose Role-based or feature-based installation. Click Next.
Under Server Selection, review the selected server. Click Next.
Choose Remote Desktop Services role. Click Next.
On the Features page, accept default features and click Next.
In the role services, check Remote Desktop Session Host. Click Next.
Review the confirmation page. Click Install.
The installation will begin.
After the installation is complete, reboot the system.
Step 2. Install View Agent in RDS server.
Log in to RDS server and install View Agent. Run the View Agent installer. Click Next on the welcome screen.
Accept EULA. Click Next.
Choose to install all features. Click Next.
Type IP address of connection server. Type domain administrator credential. Click Next.
The wizard is ready to install the application.
The installation will begin now.
Click Finish after the installation is completed successfully. Reboot the server.
Step 3. Create RDS Host Farm in View Connection server.
Logon to View Administrator, https://172.16.0.163/admin. Under Inventory, expand Resources and click Add.
Type Farm ID. Change settings if you need to. I will leave default. Click Next.
Select RDS host. Click Next.
Review settings. Click Finish.
In this way you can setup RDS Host Farm in VMware Horizon 6. Now, you can deploy RDS hosted applications or desktops.
